Children’s Fishing Event
Sponsor: International Fellowship of Hunting and Fishing Rotarian (IFHFR)
Date of event: Saturday, July 30, 2011 |
Haitian children were taken on their first fishing
trip. The host was the International
Fellowship of Hunting and Fishing Rotarians, (the Fellowship) a
charitable organization
dedicated to introducing disadvantaged children to the environment
and fishing. The
Fellowship’s membership is comprised mostly of Rotarians from
southeast Florida.
The children, ages 12 to 17, were principally from South Florida
Urban Ministries.
Others included children from Non-violence USA and some who
participated in the
Special Olympics.
The half-day fishing trip was on the Reward Won out of Miami Bayside
Marina. The
children caught fish and had their first experience with some sea
sickness, leaving them
with a life time memory. On returning to port, each child received a
Fellowship shirt
and trophy for being a “winner”. The children were further surprised
by the boat’s crew
giving each young angler a new fishing rod and reel.
Each year the Fellowship sponsors fishing trips, from the Miami-Dade
and Broward
County areas. In addition, it sends a group of disadvantaged
children to a week of
summer camp at a Florida camp to promote the benefits of the outdoor
experience.
